Black Friday Self Care Tips

Even when you commit your life to following rituals for self-care and renewal you can get hit with a curveball, especially around Black Friday or Cyber Monday. Maintaining your healthy lifestyle, sticking to weight loss goals, or sticking to any kind of self-improvement plan is not easy. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Make it even harder. One wrong decision can lead to a bad habit that seems impossible to break. I’ve been on a long journey with my health and fitness, but I can attest to the many struggles that come along with this personal commitment. However, I’ve found that these challenges can cause you to take a closer look inside to find resilience and remember the many reasons why you became passionate about health and wellness in the first place. And the end of the year is the perfect time to do it.

My interest in beauty, health, and wellness came from my exceptional mother who was a registered nurse. She lived her life serving others and caring for people of all ages with illnesses. Unfortunately, she passed away after fighting cancer but what she taught me never left me. She was always so focused on caring for others that she rarely made time for herself. Many of my family members suffered from health conditions, and I became very health conscious at an early age. But that doesn’t mean that I wasn’t plagued with temptations that were not good for me.

Ultimately, you have to learn to take care of yourself. It isn’t always a natural instinct and sometimes people will even make you feel guilty for putting yourself first. Having a health scare will cause you to refocus your energies on being good to yourself. Self-care Sundays are perfect for taking time to reflect on what loving and caring for yourself means. Through the storms of life, I’ve come up with a few simple self-care rituals that leave me feeling like a functioning human being and I’m glad to share.

Eat More Cake

A moment of tasteful indulgence can make the world of a difference. I find renewal in eating a perfectly prepared slice of cake with a coffee or glass of wine. Usually it’s from the deli at Publix or from Starbucks (although recently I found some darn good slices for $1.00 at Walmart). I take my time to enjoy the flavors and mindfully eat each bite. In that moment, I’m taken away from tribulation and filled with endorphins that say everything is good.

Do Absolutely Nothing

It’s hard to be lazy sometimes but finding balance means being still enough to reflect, relax, and renew. Sometimes it’s okay to take some time to do nothing. That means turning it all off and just listening to some music and laying on the couch. You’ll be surprised at how much better you’ll feel afterwards.

Take a Bubble Bath

Grab the candles and your favorite bubble bath. Fill up the tub and get in the water. You might feel anxious at first and have to convince yourself to enjoy the moment. Try to let go of all of your thoughts, plans, and concerns and just enjoy the special little private getaway that you’ve created just for you.

Create a Gratitude Journal

Write down all of the things that you are grateful for. Take some time to think about the many great things that are going on in your life. It can be easy to get stressed and overburdened with daily tasks, but a gratitude journal will help you to think about positive things and feel better about your life. Do you have a great family? Did you make an exciting new dish for dinner last night? Did you finally pick out the perfect nail color? There’s always something to be thankful for.

October Beauty Blogger Spotlight

Corliss “LyriQ” Hambrick

We are excited to feature a top beauty influencer each month. This month we are spotlighting Corliss “LyriQ” Hambrick, a health, beauty, and fitnesss Vlogger, blogger, model, actress and singer based in Atlanta, Georgia.

Q&A

How long have you been blogging?

I’ve been blogging since 2016.

What inspired you to launch your blog?

Watching my families health I already had plans to do something to be more active not just for myself but for others. So after years of planning I finally took the leap of faith and did it.

When wearing foundation do you prefer powder or liquid? Why?

I like liquid foundation, I don’t use it often but I always felt like you could go further with liquid by hiding blemishes.   Mostly controlling how natural you can still be without clumping so much on, It’s an art.

What is your favorite skin care line? Why?

I’m not stuck down to one brand really, I’m obsessed with fenty beauty’s fat water. I love the fact that it hydrates your skin and my dark spots have disappeared since I’ve been consistent with it. Farmacy Beauty for their eye cream, it helps on my busy days when I miss sleep and end up with bags under my eyes. My cleansers are never consistent, I change through the seasons depending on what my skin needs.

What would you say are three qualities of being a good friend? Three qualities in any good friendship would be communication which leads to trust, support and most importantly selflessness. Knowing that’s it’s always not about one person all of the time, celebrate one another.

What is one makeup product that you cannot live without? Why?

It’s not really a makeup product but a savior. I have to have apple cider vinegar anywhere and everywhere. Especially because of Covid-19 with wearing masking on all of the time. If I have nothing else I have it with me to cleanse my face and get rid of all of the pimples that came to visit me. Also if my skin is dried out from my eczema.

Summer Skincare Essentials

Have you ever noticed that you skin gets dryer in the winter or tends to produce more oil in the summertime? Do ever feel like the skin care products that you used in the fall don’t work that well in the spring? Are you wondering what products may work well through different seasons? I’ve found a few skin care products that help me to manage changing skin year-round.

Cerave is undoubtedly one of my top summer skincare essentials. My dermatologist recommended this many years ago and I’ve tried several different skin care products in this line. I like the foaming cleanser and the light feel of the moisturizers, but sometimes I feel like I can use a bit more moisture on my face. I’ve also tried their skin care products with Hyaluronic Acid and swear by this stuff because it helps to exfoliate the skin.

Many of the Asian skincare brands are amazing as well. The soaps are very natural and also exfoliate. In some seasons they can be a little harsh and I wouldn’t recommend them if you have really sensitive skin. The funny thing is that many of the old school soaps work well too! I think the skin is okay if it just gets a little attention.

In the past, I used to use Aveeno and I really like this product too. They have a brightener that seems to balance the skin if you’ve recently had a scrub or a peel. The misconception is that the any quick wash is good is enough. If you’ve ever used makeup removal wipes or oil blotters, you can literally see the dirt buildup. Just like the rest of our bodies, the skin needs a little affection. Just a few moments of self-care really will go a long way.

At the end of the day, nothing beats a good portion of water and some beauty rest!

All products discussed on So Healthy and Well are independently selected. If you purchase items using our links, we may earn a commission.

Summer Essentials 2021

There are a few items that I recently added to my list of must have’s this summer and I thought it would be nice to write a blog post about them. I am always amazed at the vast array of new products being offered – especially in the beauty industry. Just when you think you’ve had enough hyaluronic acid and collagen filled skin care products and exfoliating body washes you discover yet another ground-breaking product that seems to get the job done. I have tried out some great new places and products this summer, but these few have made it to the list of summer makeup bag essentials.

Smudge Free Foundation

The options for foundation are endless when it comes to summer essentials amazon. There are always a ton of great new products to try, but I’ve learned that the right drug store foundation can keep me looking fresh and eliminate my fear of the smudge. I was looking for a light foundation that wouldn’t rub off on someone if I gave them a hug and I think I found it. It’s called L’oreal Infallible 24-Hour Fresh Wear with SPF (you need that SPF!). You wouldn’t believe how smooth and seamless this looks for casual grocery store shopping or even trips to the gym.

No More Flaky Cheeks!

I waited forever for the ColourPop blush STIX. When I finally found the right color, of course it was out of stock and so I waited yet again. I had used another brand for creamy stick blush in the past, but really liked the bright summery colors that this line offered when I saw it at Ulta.  Well low and behold, I tried it and added it to summer makeup bag essentials. It’s something about a touch of “under pressure” that seems to give my face a glow.

More Reds!

Red Wine. Did you say wine?! Yes, I was a Merlot lover for such a long time but recently transitioned over into something with a balance of bitterness and tart. I felt like my Merlot and even Shiraz was getting a bit sweet and really began liking something slightly darker. I’ll probably work my way back around to the Merlots and maybe even white wines again someday, but for now I am really into the Cabs.

If you like wine or if you’re curious, please send me an email for an invite to the next One Hope wine tasting on Thursday August 18, at 7PM EST. The wines are top rated Napa Valley bottles, and every purchase goes towards a good cause.

Cheers to a great rest of your summer and to the fluffy fall sweaters and boots that are soon to come!
