Let’s Face It – Skincare Isn’t Just About Aesthetics

One of the greatest tips that I heard from one of my favorite TV talk show hosts when I was in my twenties was “Take care of your skin!”

It’s one thing that we often take for granted.

There are so many misconceptions and at first it can seem time consuming and self centered to actually create a skin care routine.

Am I too focused on the way that I look?

You ask yourself these questions, but really skincare is just as essential as any other area of self care.

It’s often an external indicator of your internal health and let’s face it, it’s one thing that you’re kinda stuck with on the journey.

So why not give it some extra love and affection.

Despite the many misconceptions, there are many simple products on the market and easy ways to give yourelf some self love with a little toner, cleanser, moisturizer, and serum.

For wellness month, here are a few facts about skincare and the many benefits beyond aesthetics.

Your skin is your largest organ. It acts as a protective barrier between you and the outside world, helping protect against environmental irritants, microbes, and physical damage.

Your skin is constantly renewing itself. The outer layer of skin is continually shedding dead cells and replacing them with new ones. Your skin is essentially a work-in-progress 24/7.

Your skin helps regulate body temperature. When you’re hot, sweat and increased blood flow near the skin’s surface help your body cool down. When you’re cold, blood vessels constrict to help conserve heat.

Your skin can tell you a lot about what’s happening inside your body. Changes in color, texture, dryness, or sensitivity can sometimes reflect factors such as hydration, hormones, environment, stress, or certain health conditions.

Skin is part of your immune defense system. The skin’s physical barrier and immune cells help keep unwanted microorganisms and other substances from getting into the body.

Your skin has its own microbiome. Trillions of microorganisms live on and around your skin. This community plays a role in maintaining the skin’s environment and supporting its barrier function.

Your skin helps you experience the world. It’s packed with sensory receptors that allow you to detect touch, pressure, temperature, and pain. In other words, your skin isn’t just something you see, it’s one of the ways you interact with your surroundings.

Sun protection is skincare and health care. UV exposure contributes to premature skin aging and increases the risk of skin cancer. Daily sun protection is one of the most meaningful long-term skincare habits.

Sleep can show up on your skin. Sleep is an important part of overall health, and inadequate sleep can affect the skin’s appearance and barrier function.

Stress can affect your skin. Stress can influence inflammatory pathways and may aggravate certain skin conditions. That’s another reason stress management belongs in a wellness conversation.

So when we take care of our skin, we’re doing more than investing in how we look, we’re supporting one of the body’s most important lines of defense.
