National Beach Day

There’s nothing quite like a day at the beach…

The relaxing sound of the waves, the feeling of the warm sand on your skin, and the fresh scent that flows through the salty air.

It’s feels good to disconnect from the chaos and renew, but don’t forget to suck up the fun, not the sun.

As we celebrate National Beach Day on August 30th, it’s important to remember to protect the skin you’re in.

Sun protection isn’t just about avoiding a painful sunburn. Repeated exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can contribute to premature skin aging and increase the risk of skin cancer.

A few simple habits can help you enjoy your beach day and give your skin the protection it deserves.

#1 Skin Protection Starts Early

Don’t wait until you’re already at the beach to think about sunscreen.

Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before heading outdoors. Give it enough time to absorb according to the product directions.

But wait, there’s more to it.

#2 Complete Coverage is Key

Be sure to protect those areas that we often overlook like your ears, neck, hands, feet, and the part in your hair. And even water-resistant sunscreen doesn’t last forever.

Reapply at least every two hours, and more often if you’re swimming, sweating, or toweling off.

If you’re spending the entire day outside, make sunscreen reapplication part of your beach routine, like grabbing another glass of water or checking in with your friends.

#3 Your Lips Need Love Too

Make lip protection a part of your sunscreen routine.

Look for a lip balm with SPF and reapply regularly, particularly after eating, drinking, swimming, or wiping your lips.

#4 Limit Sun Exposure

A beach umbrella, canopy, or shaded area can provide a welcome break from direct sunlight.

Try planning some shade time into your day, particularly when the sun’s rays are strongest. But remember, shade doesn’t completely block UV exposure, so continue using sunscreen and protective clothing.

#5 Layer It Up

One of the easiest ways to protect your skin is to cover it.

A lightweight long-sleeved shirt, beach cover-up, and a wide-brimmed hat can add additional protection while keeping you comfortable.

Wear clothing specifically designed with a UPF rating.

#6 Protect Your Eyes

Your eyes deserve sun protection, too.

Sunglasses can be stylish and protective at the same time. Choose sunglasses that provide 99–100% UV protection or are labeled UV400. A wide-brimmed hat can add extra protection from the sun.

#7 Stay Hydrated

Sun protection isn’t the only part of a healthy beach day.

Bring plenty of water and take regular breaks from the heat. Spending hours outdoors in hot weather can increase the risk of dehydration and heat-related illness.

Listen to your body. If you’re feeling dizzy, unusually tired, nauseated, or overheated, get somewhere cooler and seek appropriate help.

#8 A Few Extra Steps Make a Difference

You’ve had your fun now it’s time to give your skin some love!

Your skincare routine doesn’t end when you leave the beach.

After a day outdoors, gently cleanse your skin and moisturize. If your skin feels dry or irritated, give it some extra attention and avoid additional irritation.

And if you develop a significant sunburn, take steps to cool and soothe the skin and seek medical advice if the burn is severe or accompanied by concerning symptoms.

Protect the Skin You’re In

National Beach Day is about celebrating everything we love about the beach.

So put your toes in the sand. Take the swim. Watch the sunset. Build the sandcastle. Make the memories.

This National Beach Day, soak up the memories, not the UV rays. Protect your skin with broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, protective clothing, sunglasses, plenty of water, and a little time in the shade.
