Black History in Beauty

Bring on the confetti! Turn up the music! Let’s celebrate beauty and history!

Black beauty brands are doing big things and this month is the perfect time to celebrate the major shift toward inclusivity over the past decade.

Things have most definitely changed for the better and today there are tons of options for women to choose from with a diverse range of products.

Back in the day, most brands offered limited shade ranges. This started to change around 2017, when broader foundation ranges proved that diversity was both necessary and profitable. Many mainstream brands offered very limited shades, leaving many skin tones underserved.

Brands have steadily expanded shade offerings, diversified products, and developed foundations for a wider range of skin tones, ages, and needs.

Today, about 60% of beauty brands offer extended shade ranges, compared with roughly 20% just five years ago.

That’s Black History!  These beauty brands are making an impact through inclusivity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Fenty Beauty

Rihanna’s groundbreaking beauty line, launched in 2017, revolutionized the makeup industry by offering a wide range of foundation shades from the start. The brand has forced legacy brands to expand their offerings and finally take diversity seriously.

Pat McGrath Labs

Founded by legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath, this luxury makeup brand quickly became one of the most influential in the world. It set new creative standards, and McGrath has been honored globally for her contributions to beauty.

Juvia’s Place

Created by Chichi Eburu in 2016 with just $2,000, Juvia’s Place grew into a globally recognized cosmetics brand known for highly pigmented products and inclusivity for deep skin tones. It’s become a go-to for bold color and representation in beauty.

Kudos to these history makers. They don’t just sell great products. They redefine beauty for all women and inspire generations.
